It helps you as our customer to have clearly defined goals for what is required and what is nice to have upgraded, modified and installed on your aircraft. This will help us your aviation service provider help you achieve those goals. FRAM will keep you informed at the very beginning starting with providing you a better understanding of how we do business.
Shown below are categorized services we at FRAM use to help you understand how your goals will be classified and the types of different services required to achieve your goals.

Definition: $ A Standard Upgrade would be an aviation service provided by FRAM Modifications Department for FAA approved Kits manufactured by the customer's aircraft manufacturer or by third party suppliers of FAA approved Standard Type Certificated (i.e. STC) Kits.
Usually Engineering Services are not required.

Airframe Standard Upgrade Ex. Installing a manufacturer's winglet kit on the wings of the same manufacturer's aircraft.

Avionics Standard Upgrade Ex. Removing a King GPS receiver and replacing with it with a Garmin GPS receiver in an aircraft where the Garmin Kit has been STC pre-approved for that aircraft with all the mounting hardware and adaptors included with the Kit.

Power Plant Standard Upgrade Ex. Installing an Oil Filter to an engine which currently does not use an oil filter which a third party supplier has developed as an STC FAA approved Kit with all the instructions and hardware to complete the standard upgrade.

Definition: $$
A Custom Upgrade would be an aviation service that takes a Standard Upgrade FAA certified kit produced by the customer's aircraft manufacturer and because of peculiarities to the customer's aircraft such as aircraft repairs, other kit installation or previous custom modifications which prevent the Standard Upgrade from being installed per the kit manufacturer's instructions which requires deviations to the kit's installation instructions or hardware.
Engineering services will be required to document and possibly develop new hardware or modify the existing kit hardware to complete the Standard Upgrade. The changes must be submitted to the FAA for approval.

Airframe Custom Upgrade Ex. The installation of a GPS Antenna which is part of a kit which recommends a location on a particular aircraft which do to other upgrades, repairs or modifications no longer has that space available for the GPS Antenna install.

Avionics Custom Upgrade Ex. Modifying an existing instrument panel to include an Artificial Horizon approved by the aircraft manufacturer in a location where another avionics instrument is located which requires being relocated and a new adapter plate for the AI needs designed and fabricated.

Power Plant Custom Upgrade Ex. A customer requirement for a STC Turbocharger installation to an existing engine that was previously modified with an exhaust system upgrade that causes installation interference.

A Custom Modification requires engineering development, documentation, and in some situations flight testing with data documentation required for FAA approval. Sometimes this is an iterative process depending on the complexity of the modification.
FRAM Engineering department has previous experience in helping develop and certify some very sophisticated prototype aircraft and aircraft custom modification kits. We will usually submit a more formal quote, bid and or proposal that will cover as many unknowns as possible.

Airframe Custom Modification Ex.
Total new customized interior developed to the customers specifications. STC FAA approval required. Or a new exterior mounted fairing sensor assembly requiring customized locations with airframe penetrations.

Avionics Custom Integration Ex. Installing new avionics equipment that has no pre approved STC or manufacturer's TC Kit for FAA approved installation on a particular aircraft.
